One of the first signs I noticed in my little girls writing, that made me think she had dyslexia was, mirror writing. Certain letters she would mirror write in words. I spoke to her teachers about this, saying I thought she had dyslexia. They told me that many young children mirror write and it corrects itself. Yet if she was still doing after aged 7, this could be a sign of dyslexia.

To help my little girl with writing her letters, she practised by tracing over the top of letters and words. This first helped her learn how to write her name correctly. Now we used tracing if she is struggling to spell words, it helps her remember.

• All children learn to write by tracing over letters and words. This helps them remember the correct shape of letters and spaces in words. This is a form of muscle memory.
• Many young children mirror write and learn to correct this. Mirror writing is a sign of dyslexia, especially if the child continues after the age of 7.

• Is Child Dyslexic? Mirrored writing is a signs of dyslexia. If you feel your child has dyslexia speak to their teacher, ask for advice. See the "Understanding Dyslexia" and "Get Help" to learn more about dyslexia and how to get help.
• Mirrored Letters - The letters a child is most likely to mirror write are, "b, d, p, and q". If you are practising tracing these letters, write them as part of a word. This helps the child remember the correct position of the letter more.
• Spelling Help - My little girl mirror writes letters on spelling tests. If your child does this, speak to the teacher and ask for them to relax the rules.
